An unprecedented journey is on the horizon for trainers in Lumiose City! The Pokémon Company is excited to reveal the latest Nintendo Switch title, Pokémon Legends: Z, set to launch in late 2025.

A New Story unfolds in Lumiose City that’s under the Urban Redevelopment Plan

The narrative unfolds in Lumiose City, where a redevelopment initiative aims to transform the city into a shared space for people and Pokémon. In contrast to its depiction in the 2013 Pokémon X and Pokémon Y games, Lumiose City now features enhanced greenery and modern facilities.

The Story Begins with a Sightseeing Trip to Lumiose City

While visiting Lumiose City during travels, players are welcome to stay in an old hotel named Hotel Z. This hotel will serve as the base for trainers and the new friends they will meet in Lumiose as they tackle all sorts of incidents they will encounter in the city.

Wild Zones: Habitats for Wild Pokémon

Lumiose’s urban redevelopment initiative, spearheaded by Quasartico Inc., has introduced "wild zones" to foster coexistence between humans and Pokémon. These zones utilize advanced technology to create habitats for Pokémon.  Players can engage in Pokémon battles inside the wild zones and capture them using Poké Balls.

A Pokémon Series First: Pokémon and Trainers Take Action in Real Time During Battle

In previous titles within the Pokémon video game series, each Pokémon acted once per turn. However, in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, trainers and their Pokémon will engage in real-time movement during battles, allowing Pokémon to execute their moves as prompted by their trainers. Beyond type matchups, players must adapt to new gameplay mechanics, including optimal timing for switching Pokémon or executing moves, the varying durations for launching moves, and the extent of their impact area. This groundbreaking approach to Pokémon battles adds an exciting new dimension to the game.

Pokémon and Trainers Who Appear in the Story

Your Character

After arriving in Lumiose for some sightseeing, trainers can make new friends and tackle all sorts of incidents in the city. After arriving in Lumiose, certain events will lead trainers to befriending a Pokémon that will become their adventure partner, thus beginning their journey as Pokémon trainers.

Which Pokémon will you set off an adventure with: Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile?

People and Pokémon You Can Encounter in Lumiose City

Trainers: In this game, you can befriend someone who works at Hotel Z, assisting the owner in any way possible. Although sometimes they come on too strong, their passion lies in helping people and Pokémon. They are also quite adept in Pokémon battles. The initial appearance you select will dictate whether you meet Urbain or Taunie.

AZ, the towering owner of Hotel Z, stands over 9 feet tall and claims to be 3,000 years old. Beneath his quiet demeanor lies a profound determination and resolve.

This unique Floette stands out from its peers, distinguished by the black flower it carries. The Eternal Flower Floette is noted to have lived for 3,000 years and is always by AZ's side.

Jett serves as the CEO of Quasartico Inc., a major player in Lumiose’s urban redevelopment, aiming to reshape the city for the benefit of both people and Pokémon.

Vinnie, a big man in sunglasses, is Jett's secretary at Quasartico. He is perpetually busy and known for his efficiency in getting work done.

The Legendary Pokémon Zygarde

Zygarde consists of numerous cell-like components, changing form based on how many have come together. Its brain is formed from the few existing Zygarde Cores, while the rest of its body comprises Zygarde Cells, which are much more abundant. It appears to be particularly interested in trainers... what could its role in this story be?

The Key to This Title: Mega Evolution

In Lumiose City, trainers sometimes see Pokémon undergo Mega Evolution—a kind of Evolution that transcends standard Evolution. Effectively using Mega Evolution will likely be your key to victory in Pokémon battles.

Mega Evolution Can Turn the Tide of Battle—But What Is It?

Mega Evolution goes beyond the limits of regular Evolution. Only certain Pokémon can Mega Evolve. Doing so imparts power greater than regular Evolution by temporarily unleashing the energy hidden within the Pokémon. Pokémon change their appearance when they Mega Evolve, and certain Pokémon may even change types.

When trainers have a strong bond with their Pokémon, a Key Stone worn by the trainer resonates with a Mega Stone held by their Pokémon, allowing Mega Evolution to take place. Eventually, trainers will wear a Mega Ring with a Key Stone embedded in it. Other trainers may wear their Key Stones in different ways.

Here are more examples of Mega-Evolved Pokémon:
